Both GPS and laser rangefinders solve the same basic problem — knowing how far away something is — but they get there differently, and each has genuine strengths depending on how you play.
If speed and simplicity matter most
A GPS rangefinder generally gives you distances the instant you look at it, without needing to physically aim at anything. For golfers who want quick, general yardages without breaking stride, that speed is a real advantage.
If precision to a specific target matters most
A laser rangefinder can generally give you an exact distance to a specific point — the flag, a tree, a bunker edge — which a GPS unit's mapped distances can't replicate with the same precision, since GPS distances are based on general course boundaries rather than the exact flag position on a given day.
Course coverage is a real practical factor
A GPS device only works well on courses it has mapped; a laser rangefinder works anywhere, since it doesn't depend on preloaded map data at all. If you play a lot of different, especially smaller or newer courses, that's worth considering.
Some golfers genuinely use both
It's common to use a GPS device for a quick general sense of distance off the tee, then a laser rangefinder for precision on approach shots into the green. There's no rule saying you need to pick just one.
Neither format is objectively "better" — they solve slightly different problems, and the right pick depends on how precisely you want to measure, and how consistently you play the same courses.

- How much does precision to an exact target matter for my typical shots?
- Would the speed of a GPS unit's automatic distances fit my pace of play better?
- Am I comfortable aiming a laser rangefinder consistently, including in different lighting conditions?
