Course Mapping Basics
GPS rangefinders rely on course map data being available for wherever you're playing. Here's the general concepts behind how that typically works.
Preloaded course libraries
Many GPS rangefinders ship with a large library of courses already loaded, aiming to work "out of the box" without needing an internet connection to download a course before playing.
Course updates
Course layouts occasionally change (new tees, redesigned greens), so manufacturers periodically release updated map data, generally through a computer connection or an app.
New or very small courses
A brand-new or very small/private course may not be included in every course-mapping database, since building accurate course maps takes time and resources.
Subscription vs. free updates
Course update policies vary by manufacturer and product line — some include free lifetime course updates, while others may charge or limit updates on certain models. Always check the specific product's policy.
